BASU Training Course
The BASU course will be hosted online for 2025 beginning on Tuesday 21st January. Sign up to become an umpire for your league! There is also an optional on-field assessment to become an accredited BASU umpire.
⚠️ Existing Blus will need to renew every four years.
Course Structure
The British Association of Softball Umpires have hosted the course online since 2022.
The free course consists of an introduction and 5 learning sessions running every two weeks between January and April, followed by a practical session.
- The course consists of 4 blocks of online videos that you watch and answer questions on.
- After each block there will be an online session to discuss the section and any questions you may have.
- After the review of the last block there will be an online quiz.
- Candidates require a pass mark of 80% in the quiz.
- To pass the course you must
- take part in each session
- pass the quiz
- take part in the practical day.
To be a full BASU member you must then pass an on-field assessment.

Course Dates
Introductory session: 21st January
Block 1 Recap: 4th February
Block 2 Recap: 18th February
Block 3 Recap: 4th March
Block 4 Recap: 18th March
Final session & exam recap: 1st April
Practical session: Saturday 5th April – Parrswood Sports center 9.30- 4pm

All candidates must sign up to EdPuzzle (link below). EdPuzzle is the online platform for the course videos and quiz. This platform allows BASU to assess responses from all delivered courses across the country, which are used to modify and improve the course.
